Artisanal Wine and Countryside Day Trip

Tour Description

Explore century-old vineyards, taste organic wines and meet extraordinary winemakers on this unforgettable day trip from Madrid! Meet your bilingual wine guide at your hotel and hop in a private luxury car for the one-hour journey into one of the fastest-growing fine wine regions in Spain: the Sierra de Gredos.

Here in the foothills of the Gredos Mountains a new generation of winemakers is transforming organic, century-old Grenache vineyards into some of the most coveted wines in Spain. Our first stop of the day is one of these incredible vineyards. As we stroll through the 100-year-old vines, you’ll learn the organic and biodynamic winemaking techniques that help these ancient vines flourish as they have since Roman times!

Under the shade of an old oak tree we’ll taste white wine made from Albillo Real, an extremely rare grape that only grows in this tiny region to the west of Madrid. Back at the winery, we’ll taste two red wines made from centennial Grenache vines. The tasting is paired with cured Iberian ham and Manchego cheese.

Then we’ll set off for our second winery. During the 45-minute drive you’ll see the landscape change from granite mountains to rolling hills of sand and clay. Soon you’ll taste how this change of terroir affects the native Grenache grapes!

At our second winery we’ll meet winemaker Antonio who will show us the ins and outs of artisanal winemaking. As has been tradition in this area for thousands of years, Antonio makes his wines in a small bodega next to his family home! Here we’ll taste wine straight from both stainless steel tanks and oak barrels to discover how the flavors evolve over time.

Then it is time for lunch and more vino! Under a fig tree in Antonio’s beautiful back yard we’ll have lunch with the winemaker as we taste his small-production wines. He makes less than 1,000 bottles of some varietals! Our tapas lunch features regional products like artisanal cheeses, vegetable patés, bread from the town bakery and cured sausages.

After tasting at least six wines at two wineries in two unique wine regions, it is time to head back into the city. This 7-hour winery day trip ends back at your hotel in central Madrid.

We had a wonderful experience with Walk and Eat Spain. From the moment we called, everyone was so friendly and helpful. The tour itself was outstanding. I have done many of these, but this was the best one by far. It is worth the money - we had a fantastic time and the tour really was the highlight of our trip to Madrid!
