Madrid with Kids: A Mom’s Guide to Exploring Madrid for Families

Madrid is a fantastic place to explore with kids. From leisurely meals in lively plazas to playground breaks between sightseeing, Madrid is an extremely kid-friendly city!

At Walk and Eat, I help travelers experience the best of Madrid’s food culture and as a mom to a 9-year-old, I’ve spent years uncovering the most family-friendly ways to enjoy the city. Raising my daughter here has been an adventure in itself! Whether you're visiting Madrid with kids for a few days or settling in for longer, this guide is packed with my tried-and-tested tips for making the most of the city with little ones in tow.

Where to Eat with Kids in Madrid

Going out to eat with kids in Madrid is easier than you might think! The Spanish dining culture is very family friendly with flexible meal times and plenty of casual spots where kids are welcome.

Plaza Dining: The Perfect Setup for Families

One of the best things about Madrid is its abundance of lively plazas. These open spaces are often surrounded by restaurants. Kids can roam freely and play in the plaza while parents unwind and enjoy a glass of wine or a leisurely meal. Here are a few of my favorite plazas:

Plaza de la Paja

Located in the heart of the La Latina neighborhood, Plaza de la Paja is a charming square with outdoor seating at casual eateries. The plaza is surrounded by schools so you’ll often find kids of all ages treating the plaza as their after-school playground!  It’s a great spot to unwind and soak in the local atmosphere.

Plaza Olavide

Nestled in the Chamberí neighborhood, this peaceful plaza has various playgrounds in the center and family-friendly restaurants surrounding the square (which is technically a circle!). Plaza Olavide is a great place for a laid-back afternoon, where kids can play while parents enjoy traditional Spanish cuisine.

Plaza Santa Ana

Plaza Santa Ana is a lively square in the city center, with tables lining both sides of the plaza.  The small playground tucked in the corner is perfect for kids, while the bustling atmosphere of the Literary Quarter adds to the charm. It's a convenient and family-friendly spot for a quick break while exploring the city center as Plaza Santa Ana is very close to the Prado Museum and the Puerta del Sol.

Markets: A Casual and Fun Food Experience

Markets are a great way to sample local flavors while keeping things casual and flexible for little ones. Unlike traditional restaurants, where kids might struggle to sit through a full meal, markets offer a lively, open atmosphere where kids can move around, explore, and sample a variety of snacks.

The bright displays of fresh produce, colorful tapas counters, and bustling food stalls make for an exciting, sensory-filled experience that keeps children entertained while parents enjoy authentic local bites. Plus, with so many options in one place, even picky eaters can find something they’ll love!

Mercado San Fernando

This market in the Lavapies neighborhood has stalls serving everything from pizza to empanadas to steak. There is a great central eating space in Mercado San Fernando that on the weekends is packed with kids playing while their parents enjoy all types of food and drinks!

Mercado de la Cebada

Bustling with life, this market has plenty of kid-approved snacks and a lively atmosphere, especially on Saturday afternoons! That’s when the market’s fishmongers fire up their grills to steam shellfish, boil octopus and cook a variety of the freshest possible seafood to sell right from their stands. People come from all over the city to feast on fresh seafood and other market-fresh products from about noon until 5:00 pm on Saturdays.

Mercado de la Cebada is also the de facto after school playground for kids from the La Latina neighborhood’s schools to play in on rainy days. Otherwise you’ll find kids and their parents hanging out in Plaza de los Carros from about 4pm until sunset on school days.

Mercado de Motores

Mercado de Motores is a vibrant market that offers something for the whole family. This pop-up market is held once a month at the Museo del Ferrocarril de Madridin the historic Delicias train station. Kids will enjoy exploring the vintage locomotives and peeking into the historic train carriages while parents can shop for artisan goods, vintage clothing, and handcrafted accessories. With food trucks serving a variety of delicious bites and live music creating a lively atmosphere, it's the perfect place for a fun-filled weekend outing!

Mercado de San Miguel

This is Madrid’s most famous market! Mercado San Miguel is located right next to Plaza Mayor and is packed with people all day long. This market offers a variety of quick bites, including jamón, croquetas, and fresh fruit juices that kids love.

Traditional neighborhood markets are a great way to experience Spanish food and culture! Whether you head in to pick up a snack on the go or buy fresh ingredients to make a meal in your rental apartment, markets are a treat for both kids and adults.

Sweet Treats & Bakeries

No day in Madrid with kids is complete without a little something sweet! Whether it’s dipping crispy churros into thick hot chocolate, cooling off with a scoop of artisanal turrón-flavored ice cream, or picking out colorful treats from a traditional pastelería (pastry shop), Madrid offers plenty of delicious ways to satisfy a sweet tooth. Strolling through the city, you’ll find bakeries and cafés tempting you with everything from flaky napolitanas to rosquillas, Madrid’s famous anise-flavored doughnuts—the perfect reward after a day of exploring.

Churrería Manosanta

Watch fresh churros being made right before your eyes and dip them in rich, thick Spanish hot chocolate. This popular churrería in the Malasaña neighborhood is a delicious, interactive treat that both kids and adults will love.

A charming French-inspired bakery, Motteau is known for its incredible croissants and pastries. This small café in the Literary Quarter is very close to the Prado Museum and makes for a great post-museum sweet snack!

El Riojano

El Riojano is a historic bakery that exudes old-world charm, offering a variety of delicious Spanish sweets. The bakery area at the front is a feast for the senses with lavish gold-plated display cases piled high with traditional sweets. Be sure to head to the back dining room area if you want to enjoy a coffee with your pastry! It’s a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience traditional Spanish pastries.

La Duquesita

One of Madrid’s most famous pastry shops, La Duquesita is renowned for its exquisite chocolate and delicate pastries. Located in the beautiful Salesas neighborhood just north of Chueca, this ornate pastelería is the ideal place to treat your family to some of the finest sweets in the city.
